How do you determine who to include in your estate plan?

You have heard your friends and family in Florida mention their estate planning is going well, and now your interest is piqued and you are considering starting the process of planning for your future. However, the thought of choosing people to name as heirs, beneficiaries, and personal representative may seem overwhelming.

The people you name in your estate plan will play a considerable role in overseeing that what you desire actually comes to fruition. According to, some important questions to think about include the following:

  • Is there someone you trust to manage your finances with fairness, honesty and integrity?
  • Who do you trust to assume the care of your children or any other dependents should you and your spouse become incapacitated?
  • Do you know someone who has the skills needed to carry out your will exactly as you have laid out?
  • Should you become incapacitated, who do you trust to make medical decisions regarding your health and wellness?

Selecting people to fulfill these responsibilities will undoubtedly take time. In fact, it should take time while you weigh your options and discuss those responsibilities with the people you are considering to fill those roles. The people you choose should have similar characteristics and values to your own. They should know you well enough that they respect your decisions and care enough about you to see that your final wishes are honored.
